get up, stand up

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.

~  Anne Frank

I don't like to write about politics on Chookooloonks, and I think that you'll find I've only done so a handful of times in the past (although admittedly, most of those times have happened in the last 6 months or so).  And despite the fact that politics is on my mind a lot these days, I don't plan on changing tack.

That said, there's no denying that there's something stirring in me these days -- wanting to make a difference, wanting to stand in my values, wanting to fight for my own rights, my family's rights, and the rights of folks who need allies.  And I keep thinking of the words Arun Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, shared with me several years ago:  we all have talents -- each and every one of us -- but we feel like we own the talent or gift.  His grandfather believed that we don't own them, but rather we are trustees of the talent, and we are called upon to use these talents for the benefit of others.

So I find myself thinking about talents and gifts I've been entrusted with, and how I can use them in service of my newfound need to do something.  I'm not sure what that's going to look like yet, but it's time to do something.
