#naphopomo 2013, day 20: experimenting

20naphopomo2013.jpg

To be very clear, I do not spend every day of my life looking at the bright side of things.  I wish this wasn't true, but there it is.  The truth is that despite my best efforts, I have a much darker side: one that is impatient and potty-mouthed, opinionated and cantankerous and, dare I say, get-off-my-lawn-ish.

Some of my closest friends call this side of me "Klaus."

Although I try my damnedest to keep Klaus at bay, I'm finding that as I get older, she gets harder to control.  And honestly, the news media lately hasn't been helping:  between George Zimmerman getting arrested for pulling a gun (again) on his girlfriend, to a renowned journalist asserting that conventional-thinking people have to suppress a gag reflex when they see families that look like mine, Klaus has been working overtime.  I seem to be raising my cane and ranting at whoever will listen even more often than usual.

This week, I decided that Klaus needed something positive to focus her energy on, so I bought a few canvases and art supplies.  I had been wanting to experiment with doing something different with my photographs, and since I've been fighting a cold and not thinking very clearly anyway, I took the last couple of days off and spent the day playing around.  These pieces in the photograph above are some of the results.  They're really just me experimenting, and are the sort of things that I would normally doodle in my private journal, but it's been fun doing them in this new way.  I have a few more in mind that I know I want to create, and I have no idea what I'm going to do with them when I'm done (they'll probably just end up on my already-very-full library walls).

For now, I'm calling them my "Mouthy Broad" series.

You know, as an homage to Klaus.
